Radiofrequency Therapy
Radiofrequency (RF) therapy offers a solution for individuals experiencing dry eyes. This treatment involves applying controlled, targeted heat to the meibomian glands, which are crucial for producing the lipid layer of the tear film. The radiofrequency energy generates heat that helps to liquefy the hardened, blocked secretions within the meibomian glands. This process improves tear film quality, reduces evaporation, and can lead to a more stable tear film, ultimately alleviating the discomfort associated with dry eyes. Furthermore, RF therapy can also tighten the skin around the eyes, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. RF is oftne .

How Does RF Work for Dry Eye and MGD?
TempSure RF delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy to heat the dermis (~39–45°C), stimulating collagen production and improving circulation. When applied to the eyelids, it softens the meibum and enhances lipid secretion, supporting tear film stability. RF also boosts healing and collagen remodeling in aesthetic or post-op contexts.
-
Stimulates collagen production: The heat triggers the body's natural healing response, leading to the production of new collagen. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin.
-
Improves circulation: The heating effect also enhances blood flow in the treated area.
When applied to the eyelids, the heating specifically helps to soften the meibum (oils) within the meibomian glands, which then enhances their lipid secretion. This improved oil flow contributes to better tear film stability.

What to Expect During a Radiofrequency Session
Please note, Radiofrequency (RF) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapies are both emerging treatments for dry eyes, each with a distinct mechanism of action. These therapies are recommended to be used in combination for best outcomes, depending on the patient's specific needs. For dry eye with associated MGD, we typically recommend an initial series of 3-4 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart.
Preparation & Treatment
The area around your eyes will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for treatment to ensure optimal results. A small pad will be placed on your shoulder, and a moisturizer will be applied to your upper cheek and brow. A handheld device will then be used to deliver controlled radiofrequency energy to the skin around your eyelids and to your meibomian glands. You will experience a warming sensation during the procedure, but it should not cause pain.
Follow-Up
Multiple treatment sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired results. Your provider will collaborate with you to create a personalized treatment plan and schedule any subsequent appointments.
